Two examples of maps used by Microsoft for play testing Halo. I wish Psychostats did that for Counterstrike and Day of Defeat...

Yeah, and conversely use this to gain an unfair advantage...
That being said, I'd love to have the same kind of things as seen in civilization (timeline and "score" of respective players) to better see when an opponent really gained the upper hand, at which point the "new technology handicap" was balanced by increased strike power.
This is nascent in the "replay with comment" feature in eg Command & Conquer 3, when the skilled commentator is able to decrypt at a glance the path a player choose "tech up" or "mass unit".
It could also underscore the Vadorian technique (better know as "rabbitty rabbit") as a booster of Gandhian performance.

There were also a lot of commented TA replays circulating, although I did not use them.
For Civilization, I remember that at the end of a game (won or lost) there was a replay feature showing the global map with a different color representing each player's influence. The borders between colors moved as cities were taken or lost, and a comment line highlighted major events such as new discoveries, contacts made, wars and peaces, wonders of the world, civil wars etc. I was nice to watch. There was also a "power" graph represented along a time line with major events - but IIRC that one is also present in Freeciv.
Now I must make a conscious effort not to 'apt get install freeciv' again...
