We have been beating the presence drum for what now seems like an eternity, but it seems that the idea of merging communications with social context is finally about to enter the mass market thanks in part to such research that helps us push the idea that the user interface for a communication device should really be centered on presence.
Results of a recent study show that "the call initiation process would benefit from an awareness display system by giving access to more accurate context information that caller already consider (e.g., task status and physical availability) and encourage callers to consider additional context that they consider less often, but receivers deem important (e.g., social availability)".
The study cited is particularly interesting because it promotes ideas of automated behavioral sensory fusion that could help produce a more encompassing notion of presence.
