Following is the text of the inaugural lecture of the Geneva Lecture Series by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at Palais des Nations, on 29 April 2008. It focuses on how to address the root problem of the world's poorest, the majority of which are small farmers. I believe that the food crisis is an essential topic in current news because its socio-political consequences could be dire if it grows to trigger catastrophic events and lasting instability in some countries.

You may remember the International Food Policy Research Institute article I posted six months ago, just before the crisis hit front page news : http://infotain.grabeuh.com/story/186
As Ban Ki-moon explains, we have been aware of the problem for a long time, but we were unable to realize how inelastic the agricultural markets are for the weakest economic actors.
